Fans of Lawrence Block's Bernie Rhodenbarr novels may be nonplussed to find the bookish burglar reinvented as Whoopi Goldberg in this trifling, obnoxious action picture. Bernice Rhodenbarr (Goldberg) is a habitual burglar recently released from prison. She works in a bookstore while trying to resist the temptation to return to crime. After a crooked retired cop (G.W. Bailey) shakes her down, she's forced to commit another burglary to get the payoff money. But the break-in gets Bernice involved in a murder. Loaded with gratuitous violence, BURGLAR's few laughs are lost in a sea of infantile bad taste.
