Before Dawn Reviews

A programmer based on an Edgar Wallace story, this one concerns a $1 million cache of buried loot--its whereabouts revealed by criminal Joe Valerie (Reicher). His demented Austrian physician Dr. Cornelius (Oland) has designs on the money, but must outwit private eye Dwight Wilson (Erwin) and clairvoyant Patricia Merrick (Wilson). Much of the sleuthing takes place in a mysterious, haunted mansion, where the corpses soon begin piling up. If that isn't enough, there's also a budding romance between Wilson and Merrick, the latter nearly falling prey to the (not so) mysterious killer. A fun movie with Warner Oland playing it like Charlie Chan. Very fast-paced whodunit thanks to Pichel's taut direction, with the added stylistic flair of a glowing deathmask which floats through the mansion's hallways. Penned by Wallace during his stay in Hollywood.
