A Night to Remember Reviews

Aherne is a novelist who specializes in murder mysteries. His wife, Young, persuades him to leave their apartment and move to a basement flat in Greenwich Village. There she hopes he will find the ambience to complete a romantic story he has been trying to write. Young's plans go awry when this new address proves to be the worst place imaginable for a writer trying to keep his mind off murder. Strange things start happening, though neither can quite put a finger on what is really going on. An almost naked corpse turns up in the back yard. The cops take up the case without much success, which is all Aherne needs to get his juices flowing. He sets out to solve the murder himself, eventually piecing together the clues until the crime is solved. A thriller of the most ordinary order, this film is troubled with too many ingredients in too small a package. The script is overwritten, dragging out the proceedings much longer than need be with some extraneous characters that would best have been left out. The result is an overlong programmer that clearly could have used some cutting. What makes the film work on any level is good lead performances by Aherne and Young. They give weight to their characters, making what could have been routine just a little better than average. Young's career was marked with ups and downs, and this was a rather forgettable addition to her body of work.
