You Don't Know Her Name, but Sydney Sweeney Is Killing 2018

You might not know Sydney Sweeney's name, but you definitely know her face, because she is everywhere in 2018.

The 20-year-old actress first captured viewers' attention in Netflix's coming-of-age series Everything Sucks!, which was sadly canceled after just one season. Sweeney played Emaline, a young thespian with a flair for the dramatic who also happened to be Kate's (Peyton Kennedy) not-so-secret crush. It's a shame Netflix canceled the '90-set series prematurely, because fans were excited to see where Kate and Emaline's burgeoning relationship, which finally picked up in the finale, would head in the future.

After Everything Sucks!, Sweeney next took on the role of Eden, a pious newlywed, in the second season of Hulu's Emmy-winning drama The Handmaid's Tale. Married to Nick (Max Minghella) during a shocking ceremony involving multiple child brides, Eden eventually fell in love with a young man who actually returned her affections, and the two ran away together. Unfortunately, Eden met a rather horrifying end when she was executed for her infidelity. Her demise was certainly tragic -- this is The Handmaid's Tale, after all -- but became even more so when it was revealed Eden's family had been the people to turn her in.

The good news for Sweeney is that she wasn't absent from our TVs for long: On Sunday, she popped up opposite Amy Adams in the summer's hottest new series: HBO's limited series Sharp Objects. In "Fix," Sweeney appeared as Alice, Camille's (Adams) roommate in the psychiatric facility where she was receiving treatment.

Sharp Objects Is Not Another Big Little Lies

The two women formed a bond, and when Alice eventually committed suicide by drinking Drano near the end of the episode, it drove Camille to self-harm with a loose screw she'd found in the bathroom. Beyond her immediate reaction, Camille was deeply affected by Alice's death, and viewers soon realized the busted iPhone Camille's been listening to on all her drives around Wind Gap once belonged to the young girl. Because of Alice's sudden end, it's unlikely we'll see Sweeney again on Sharp Objects, but given that the show relies heavily on Camille's memories, we wouldn't be surprised if she popped up down the line.

To say that Sweeney has had quite a year is an understatement; last year she was portraying Female Student #1 in The Middle episode "The Final Final" and a character named Willa in a single episode of Freeform's Pretty Little Liars. Thanks to her three prominent roles in 2018, Sweeney has proven this might have been the year she made her entrance, but she'll probably be back for a lot more in the future.
