Is The Newsroom's Aaron Sorkin Done With TV? He's Got An Answer

A behind-the-scenes look at a fictional sketch-comedy television show.
Not everyone knows Aaron Sorkin's name, but they've almost certainly heard his trademark rich and frenetic dialogue. The creator and writer of The West Wing, Sports Night, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and The Newsroom is busy wrapping up the final season of the latter, and once that's done, his television career may fade to black.

Orange Is the New Black could lead to Emmy gold. The Netflix series is poised to become the first Outstanding Comedy nominee from a streaming service, just as House of Cards broke the drama barrier in 2013. (The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has allowed programs from digital services to compete against broadcast and cable series since 2008.) Chances of earning some nods — nominations will be announced on July 10 — might increase, thanks to the buzz and marketing surrounding the launch of Orange's second season, which was released in its entirety on June 6. Netflix has focused much of its "For Your Consideration" Emmy campaign on the prison comedy, which didn't receive a series Golden Globe nomination for its first season but was nominated for Program of the Year and Outstanding New Program by the Television Critics Association as well as Best Comedy Series by the Critics' Choice Television Awards. House of Cards is expected to secure its second nod for Outstanding Drama Series.

In an early scene of HBO's new Aaron Sorkin drama The Newsroom, a college student asks the show's hero, Will McAvoy, why the U.S. is the best country in the world.Summer Preview: Check out more must-watch new shows It's a vapid question, to be sure, but Will's mean-spirited answer — he says simply that it isn't, and then rattles off a withering, Sorkinian litany of statistics about literacy, life expectancy and infant mortality that prove his point — is both electrifying and kind of depressing. Will (Jeff Daniels, in his first TV series role) is a moderate Republican cable news anchor whose show, "News Night," has succeeded in the ratings because Will has played it safe, journalistically speaking. My initial reaction was concern for Kalinda's and Alicia's friendship. However, in the past week, I have become intrigued by the potential fallout. Not only will this revelation shake the Florrick family, but after two years into the series, it could impact characters like Kalinda, Will, Cary and Eli in a way that the original scandal never did. Also, while overall viewership remains strong, Wife's 18-49 demo has been rather low this season. New competition from Body of Proof will probably not help the situation. With The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin made it cool to care about politics. Sorkin's band of quippy White House staffers and a president who was hard not to love helped him walk the line between politics and entertainment and score repeated Emmy wins. We chatted with Sorkin, one of the influential television industry players interviewed for TVGuide.com's Best of the Decade section, about his beloved political drama, why it struck a chord with viewers, and how a similar approach to melding Hollywood and Washington hurt his follow-up, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

Last year at this time, comedian D.L. Hughley was on one of the hottest shows on TV. At least that's what everyone thought Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip would be until it slowly faded away into irrelevancy. Nonetheless, Hughley quickly moved on and is now going off in his new HBO stand-up special, "Unapologetic" (airing Saturday at 10 pm/ET). Here, Hughley talks about why he's not looking for forgiveness, the reason he thinks Studio 60 tanked, and whether or not he can take a joke like the victims on his recent BET hidden-camera show, S.O.B. TVGuide.com: Why is the special called "Unapologetic"?D.L. Hughley: Because nowadays when anybody passi

It's goodbye to the last remaining — well, almost — original ER cast member. Question: Since I don't believe it, or understand it, unless it comes from you, can you please tell me what is going on with Studio 60? Is it going to get canceled?Answer: NBC already ordered a full season's worth of episodes, so it would appear to be safe until May. But if the ratings don't improve, I highly doubt it'll see a second year. Stranger things have happened though.
With six nominations — including a pair for 30 Rock — NBC has bested the rest going into this year's Writers Guild Awards, to be held Feb. 11, 2007. In the comedy category, 30 Rock's staff of scribes is joined by their peers at The Office, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm and, yes, Arrested Development. On the drama side, it's Grey's Anatomy versus Lost, 24, Deadwood and The Sopranos.Vying for best new series are 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Heroes, Studio 60 and Ugly Betty.
Which milestones were achieved this Monday? Take a look:— Prison Break hit a season high, with 9.58 million total viewers.— Falling juuuust shy of 16 million viewers, Heroes set yet another series high. (And how about Eden goin' all Superman II Ursa on us?)— During the 10 o'clock hour, both Studio 60 (down 480K, to 7.31 mil) and What About Brian (slipping 250,000, to 5.35 million) sank to series lows.
NBC confirmed on Thursday afternoon that it has ordered nine additional episodes — for a full-season slate of 22 — of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, this despite disappointing ratings for the big-budget drama. But in announcing the pickup, NBC hinted that exactly who fills Studio 60's audience may have been a factor in its good, if surprising, fortune: The series boasts one of prime time's highest concentrations of affluent and college-educated viewers. So all you dirt-poor, high-school dropouts, go ahead and stick with What About Brian.
Not long after TVGuide.com reported on the full-season pickup for ABC's Men in Trees (which will now air after Grey's Anatomy), the Ausiello Report scooped similar good news for fans of NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Mike has more here.... Ray Liotta's Smith, meanwhile, is still dead, done, finito, fork-impaled, but CBS.com is streaming four never-broadcast episodes on its Innertube broadband channel, starting today. Also, a synopsis of how the producers planned to resolve the serialized drama's first season will be posted on the series' site at CBS.com.
In a statement to MediaPost, an NBC rep refutes talk — fueled by a recent Fox News report — that Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is thisclose to being axed. The missive reiterates that NBC recently ordered three more scripts for the struggling Monday series, and maintains that the show, at this point, still "is profitable." The buzz here in the TV Guide hallways is that NBC will wait to see the numbers for one more Studio 60 airing before making any major decisions, while MediaPost says that a time-slot change, not all-out cancellation, is a more likely first remedy. On a related note, NBC has pulled the already humiliated Kidnapped from its sad Saturday burn-off berth for the duration of November sweeps, replacing it with Law & Order: CI reruns.KIDNAPPED UPDATE: It's just been whispered in my ear that, as we speak, Kidnapped is wrapping production on its 13th and final episode, and that the entire demi-season "is bound to have a life on DVD." Question: So, Friday Night Lights is now the one show that I absolutely will not miss! Please say A) the ratings were amazing on Monday night, B) you have some news about upcoming story lines and C) you will spend the next month of your life promoting the heck out of it.Answer: A) The ratings weren't amazing, but they were higher than Studio 60's last several telecasts, B) a hottie from Smash's past will resurface later this season, and Lyla will be the target of an Internet smear campaign when word of her infidelity gets out (you hear that, Pam?) and C) done.
Question: I think if Studio 60 isn't "destination" TV for you, it may be time to find a new career. Really, killer stuff on Gilmore Girls, though.Answer: You watch Gilmore Girls!?!? Um, last time I checked, Matt was a boy's name.
The Hollywood trades are reporting this morning that additional script orders have been awarded to ABC's The Nine, Men in Trees and Help Me Help You (four each), as well as NBC's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (for three). Traditionally, such script orders are a decent precursor to a full-season pickup, though it must be noted that the "vote of confidence" didn’t work out particularly well for last season's Threshold, E-Ring or Out of Practice. In related news, NBC has ordered an extra, 25th episode of ER for this season, while ABC has snipped its order for the mid-season series Traveler from 13 episodes to eight.
NBC jumped the shark in 2004.The Apprentice was the hottest show on television. We're talking absolute must see TV that was oozing buzz. NBC tried to capitalize on the show's success and put all their eggs in the Donald's reality basket.I said it then, and I'm saying it now — moving The Apprentice to anchor Thursday nights sent the network right over the fin. ABC learned its lesson with Millionaire. CBS always had CSI and Everybody Loves Raymond to go with Survivor and The Amazing Race.Thursday nights belonged to NBC. It lost Friends and Frasier (which had jumped the shark years ago) and had nothing in the pipeline. First to fourth wasn't an "if", it was a "when".I understand how tempting it is to lead off each night with a game show or reality show (i.e. inexpensive show). It's also another big mistake. Deal or No Deal is getting pummeled into the ground as I type as the contestants get more and more "wacky".So you're Jeff Zucker... what do you do? Glad you asked.1. Pluck C...
Monday's juiciest ratings stories: — 8 pm titan Deal or No Deal surged with 2 million viewers to achieve a new season-best audience of 17.27 mil.— The Class simmered down a bit from its new time-slot premiere high (to 8.7 mil).— The CW's first Monday batch of fresh Chris-All of Us-Girlfriends-The Game episodes averaged 2.9 million for the night. That's 230,000 fewer than were watching 7th Heaven-Runaway, but a 400,000 bump from the quartet's most recent Sunday numbers.— And last, but not by any means least noteworthy: What About Brian (up 1.2 mil, to 8.3) bested Studio 60 (down a mil, to 7.76) to claim 10 o'clock's No. 2 spot. Aaron Sorkin, you're buying J.J. Abrams dinner.
Question: Smallville spoilers, please?Answer: Here's a spoiler wrapped in a riddle: Smallville has four couples now — Lana and Lex; Lois and Oliver/Green Arrow; Chloe and Jimmy; Martha and Lionel. Which one will be expecting by Thanksgiving? Place your bets now!
Question: Can you give me a yes or no, in your opinion, as to whether the following new shows will make it? The Class, Studio 60, Jericho, Men in Trees, Ugly Betty and The Nine?Answer: Yes, no, yes, yes, frak yeah and maybe.
CBS sure looked smart this week as The Class, in its new 8:30 pm time slot, drew an additional two million viewers (for a total of 10 mil). Paired with How I Met Your Mother (9.7 mil) in the 8 o'clock hour, the sitcombo placed second behind Deal or No Deal (15.2 mil).At 9 pm, the big week-to-week gainers were Two and a Half Men (up 1.1 million to 17.1 mil), which ruled the hour with Old Christine (13.7 mil) and NBC's Heroes (13.3 mil, up 700,000). At 10, CSI: Miami found yet another 600,000 heads, bringing its unbeatable tally to just shy of 18 million. Placing a distant second and third were Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (8.75 mil, down 300,000) and the season premiere of What About Brian, which with 7.05 million lost a full mil of lead-in The Bachelor's audience. As for the CW's own schedule shuffle, let's grade it "Incomplete," as the network rebroadcast the premieres of former Sunday occupants Chris, All of Us, Girlfriends and The Game — all of which lost to Fox's own repeat...
Kellie and Jamie had hoped to be the first female team to win The Amazing Race. They wanted to joke with Phil [Keoghan], see Madagascar or Vietnam, and maybe spend some of the cash they slyly made off their looks during the first leg (more on that later). But, as is always the case in a globe-trotting contest, you don't always get what you want. And, after they made a wrong turn during the second leg's detour, the cheerleaders from South Carolina became the third team eliminated from The Amazing Race 10. TV Guide.com: How many vaccination shots did you have to get before you started the race?Kellie: Oh gosh, it was a lot.Jamie: Seven or eight. TVGuide.com: What was the weirdest?Kellie: We had

Question: Please give us die-hard Sorkinites scoop on Studio 60!Answer: Even though the ratings cooled off a bit this week, there's promising news from our friends over at TiVo. The show currently ranks No. 12 on their most-requested Season Pass list, ahead of The Office, ER, Boston Legal, Nip/Tuck, Dancing with the Stars, etc. Hey, you gotta to take the good news where you can get it.
