Rough and rotund Frank Cannon was (in one sense) the biggest TV detective of the '70s. The L.A. PI was no 'Hollywood god,' conceded his portrayer, William Conrad. But he cared and it showed. 'Cannon' was a staple of producer Quinn Martin's detective stable for five seasons. It was up for a Best Drama Emmy in '73, and Conrad was nominated for Best Drama Actor in '73 and '74. A 1980 TV-movie had Conrad reprising the role, coming out of retirement to investigate a friend's reported suicide.
