What to Stream the Weekend of Feb. 22

It might be Oscars weekend, but considering that there'll be no host to keep things moving you might want to queue up more options. Get out a bottle of wine, pop some popcorn, and get ready to battle over what to watch first. This week we have the return of Desus & Mero, now on Showtime, with Bronx native Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as their first guest; Paddleton, a semi-improvised movie from Mark Duplass and Ray Romano that debuted at Sundance; and Miracle Workers, a delicious sweet and salty snack for those who want to sink their teeth into a tightly scripted limited series.

1. Desus & Mero

Desus and Mero are NYC legends. The Bodega Boys began as a humble Complex podcast, but the explosive personalities of Desus and The Kid Mero couldn't be contained to the sound waves. Quickly nabbed by Vice, the duo took TV by storm, and now they're headed to Showtime with an even bigger, better experience. Infused with the heart of NYC, and the Bronx in particular, Desus & Mero offers us a no-holds-barred look at how New Yorkers not only survive, but thrive. If that isn't enough, Big Bronx Energy is gonna be in the house for the premiere, as their special guest is newly elected congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

2. Paddleton

Netflix's new movie is a classic Duplass brother experiment in form. Mumblecore king Mark Duplass is back to his indie roots in this (semi-improvised!) dark comedy about two friends who are being torn apart by a cancer diagnosis. Co-starring Ray Romano, Paddleton is a effusive love letter to platonic friendships -- especially true in this case as the two struggle with expressing their emotions, leading to a falling out that could beat them before the cancer does. A little somber, a little sweet, Paddleton is worth a lazy afternoon watch.

3. Miracle Workers

Created by Simon Rich, Miracle Workers is a limited series that asks us to imagine heaven as a corporation run by God (Steve Buscemi). Two low-level and fairly incompetent employees, Craig (Daniel Radcliffe) and Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan), try to save the Earth when God gets sick of the place and decides to scrap the entire planet and start over. Much like The Good Place, Miracle Workers' version of heaven is richly diverse, deeply charming, and most importantly believes that you can be a better version of yourself. The tightly scripted series is three episodes into its six-episode season, making this the perfect time to catch up on the delightfully wholesome experience.
