Shameless, Iron Fist and more!

Look, we know that this weekend is the literal kickoff of the new football season, but you can get all the sanctioned violence between celebs right on your TV, too! Why wait for famous people to get in fisticuffs on the gridiron when you can catch the fury of Iron Fist starting this Friday?

We have that recommendation and more, courtesy of TV Guide Senior Editor Krutika Mallikarjuna who's here to help you through your weekend binge. In fact, most of our suggestions this week have some sort of rough and tumble action you love from football, so take a pass on Joe Buck and go with the following shows instead.

And if you're looking for even more suggestions, head over to TV Guide's Watch This Now! feature, which has hand-picked recommendations for all the best shows you can start watching immediately.

1. Marvel's Iron Fist

OK, so Season 1 of Marvel's Iron Fist kind of sucked. We know that. But Season 2 is back with a new showrunner and a new attitude, which means it can't get any worse, right? Right? We hope so. In Season 2, which picks up right after the events of The Defenders, Danny Rand (Finn Jones), aka Iron Fist, is back and still searching for that magical city where he learned to punch things really hard. And joining the fun will be Marvel characters Typhoid Mary and Misty Knight. Season 2 begins streaming Friday on Netflix.

2. Next Gen

Next Gen
Netflix

Your little one has watched The Secret Life of Pets a billion times. You know the words to Moana's "You're Welcome" by heart simply through the repetition of hearing it in the background. It's time for a new kids movie to be on Netflix, and just in time is the Netflix original animated kids flick Next Gen. There may be some Iron Giant vibes as it's about a young girl who befriends a robot, but this robot is here to save the world from the bad guys. Charlene Yi, John Krasinski and Jason Sudeikis lend their voices, and you can start watching this Friday on Netflix.

3. Kidding

You probably know Jim Carrey as the rubber-faced buffoon who made "Alrighty then!" a catchphrase we all agree we never want to hear again. But did you know Carrey has dipped his clown-shoe toe into dramatic waters, as he did in the excellent film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Carrey once again teams up with that film's director, Michel Gondry, for Kidding, a dark comedy about a children's show host (Carrey) who begins to lose it when his life falls apart. It's bleak and brutal, yet also poignant and hilarious. If you were on the fence about getting Showtime, this might be the show to push you over the edge. Check it out starting Sunday on Showtime.

4. Shameless

The tragi-comedy Shameless heads into Season 9, so if you haven't seen it yet you can binge the first eight seasons right now if you've got the chops. The adaptation of the popular British series shows you a LOT of the Gallagher family, which is led by an alcoholic dad played by William H. Macy. But the big news here is that star Emmy Rossum announced Season 9 would be her last, so now's your last chance to try to understand why the Emmys refuse to recognize her brilliant performance.

If you're still looking for something to watch, we've got what you're looking for in TV Guide's Watch This Now! feature. It's full of hand-picked recommendations, from the talked-about shows to the gems you can't afford to pass up.
