Veronica Mars' Jason Dohring Teases a New Logan-Veronica Dynamic in Season 4

Veronica Mars fans were thrilled when their favorite couple, Veronica (Kristen Bell) and Logan (Jason Dohring), rekindled their romance in the 2014 film after nine years apart. And in Hulu's eight-episode revival, which picks up five years after the movie, the couple will still be going strong and even living together with their adorable dog Pony. But this doesn't mean Veronica and Logan have found their happily ever after just yet. This season will find Veronica at a major crossroads in her life, as she begins to speculate about whether settling down with Logan and the P.I. lifestyle is what she really wants for her future.

"I was interested in telling the sort of story that is usually reserved for men for Veronica," creator Rob Thomas told TV Guide at the ATX Television Festival in June. "You see a lot of stories about men in their 30s, you know, trying to decide whether commitment, marriage, kids, mortgage, is the path that they want to take or if they want their freedom. And I wanted to tell that story with Veronica. I wanted her struggling with those issues."

And in a fun change in dynamic, Logan, still a successful military man, will now be a stable, emotionally intelligent, and -- dare we say -- even domestic, guiding presence in Veronica's life as she struggles through this journey. "She kind of finds herself in place in her life where she might not be moving forward, or taking the next move. And [Logan is] sort of gently -- otherwise, you'll ruffle her feathers -- but sort of trying to figure that out. And then, you know, the drama with that as well," Dohring said.

"Yeah, Logan has a much clearer vision of what he wants out of life than Veronica does, and that's a big element in the eight-episode story we're telling," added Thomas.

Dohring said adjusting to playing this new, mature Logan was difficult at first -- and not quite as fun as it was exploring Logan's more impulsive, brooding side. "I love playing the bad guy. That's always been my thing. I think there's more freedom and as an actor, you get to do all these bad things with no liability," he said. "I found it confusing [playing the good guy] the very first time, when I'm like, 'What do I do? I be a good guy, that's it?'"

Dohring said he tried to take some inspiration from Percy Daggs III, who plays Veronica's best friend Wallace Fennel, in crafting this new Logan. This isn't to say that Logan is suddenly as even-keeled as the reliable Wallace, and it doesn't even mean that there aren't aspects of the old Logan that are still evident, but it does mean that Logan has matured enough to have developed a web of positive relationships with people outside of Veronica and Dick (Ryan Hansen).

"Keith actually likes Logan and thinks he's a good influence on Veronica," Thomas said. "I mean that's how tipped-on-its-head things are now."

"Yeah, I think it starts off in a place where we can be friends," Dohring said of Logan's relationships with Wallace and Keith (Enrico Colantoni). "Because on the [original] show I would never particularly treat Veronica as well as maybe people would like that to happen. So, that's the grownup nature [of the new Logan], which requires scenes with characters that I would never participate in beforehand.

"So, it's good to be the good guy," Dohring declared.

Veronica Mars will release all eight episodes on Friday, July 26 on Hulu.
