The Walking Dead is serious about reinvention in Season 9. Its star is leaving, it has a new showrunner, the premiere is called "A New Beginning," and it's even getting a new opening credits sequence, which AMC revealed Wednesday.

The opening credits changed slightly over the course of the first eight seasons (the main title decayed a little bit every season, reflecting the increasing decrepitude of the world at large), but this is the first major overhaul. The new credits were designed by Huge Designs.

"The opening credit sequence is indicative of the new look and feel to the world this season and we wanted to give a nod to the show's graphic novel origins," executive producer Angela Kang said in a statement. "As we jump into a new chapter of the story, we wanted to present something fun and fresh for our viewers to reflect the changing landscape, where nature will be playing a bigger role. While our survivors work to rebuild and adjust to the crumbling infrastructure, the threat of the dead is constantly looming. And true to the spirit of our show, there are Easter Eggs for the fans to find if they're looking close!"

We spotted the stained glass hanging from the tree at the spot of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) final battle, the mysterious helicopter, Michonne's (Danai Gurira) katana and a noose whose significance will become clear after the premiere. And the new title is even mossy, reflecting Kang's return to nature.

The Walking Dead Season 9 premieres Sunday, Oct. 7 at 9/8c on AMC.
