What to expect when TVD returns

Sorry, Bamon fans. Things are not looking good for the BFFs on The Vampire Diaries.

Bonnie (Kat Graham) was already mad at Damon (Ian Somerhalder) when he was simply desiccating himself, so don't expect a happy reunion when when the pair sees each other three years later, after Damon offered to have Stefan's (Paul Wesley) scar transferred to himself.

"Bonnie's f---ing livid. She hates him," Somerhalder tells TVGuide.com. "She's hurt. As she should be."

And while the actor understands why Bonnie is so furious at her friend, Somerhalder defends Damon's choices - even if they are selfish.

Is The Vampire Diaries ending after Season 8?

"His actions were cowardly ... and he's going to have to work his way back, but he was justified," Somerhalder explains. "I've said this since the beginning: Damon has ill intentions, but for righteous reasons. And those are the scariest people in the world. Look at what's going on in the world right now. Look at Brussels."

Since Damon typically means well, Somerhalder says there's still hope that Damon can redeem himself in the eyes of his friends. Although, he isn't quite sure why viewers continue to give Damon second chances. "I don't know if people feel bad for him or if they just love him because he's kind of a dick and he's so funny," Somerhalder says. "All I know is that he's just stumbling through life, just grasping at straws, because this one thing that he lost [Elena] has spun him out of control.

"And because he's been around so long, he and Stefan have experienced so much pain and death in their lives together."

All of that tumultuous history between the brothers will resurface when Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) pressures Stefan to let go of Damon when The Vampire Diaries returns Friday. "Stefan really has sacrificed so much for his brother and it's because he loves the guy," Somerhalder says. "And there are so many redeeming qualities about Damon that Stefan's relentless pursuit to love and support his brother gets him in so much trouble, but they're so bonded. ... And I hope that there is redemption for Damon and his brother."

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8/7c on The CW.
