When we left off with The Handmaid's Tale, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) and June (Elisabeth Moss) had made the impossible decision to part with their daughter, Nicole, in order to help her escape to a better life in Canada. Whether that shared sacrifice will unite them or destroy their complicated bond, however, remains to be seen.

When TV Guide spoke to Elisabeth Moss about June and Serena's tentative truce and how their relationship will continue to develop in the upcoming season, premiering Wednesday, Moss said, "Where we start in Season 3, [June] believes in her. She believes that she's a good person. She believes that she will do what's best for her daughter. She believes that she is ultimately going to be a good mother, and she believes that she has an ally."

Of course, Moss was also careful to warn that the one constant of The Handmaid's Tale is that everything can change on a dime, so whether or not her faith in Serena's goodness will be rewarded remains to be seen. But regardless of whether Serena will continue to rebel against Gilead, we know June will be joining the resistance in full force in Season 3. And Moss says the story will take her character to places she never thought she'd go.

"There's so much that happens in the second half of the season that is really going to challenge the audience. We're really going to ask them to go on this journey with her, and we pushed her to places that are very surprising and very extreme," Moss said. "I think that she needs to go to these places in order to become the person that actually has to lead this resistance. You almost have to be a little bit crazy to do what she does because only a crazy person would do it. Anyone else would be like, 'This is insane, you can't do this.' She may be insane, but it's what she needs to get the job done."

When you remember that June actually chose to stay in Gilead to find and save her other daughter rather than fleeing to safety with Nicole, it's not too hard to believe that she's gone a little bit insane. Let's just hope he insanity serves her and the resistance well!

The first three episodes of The Handmaid's Tale Season 3 premiere Wednesday, June 5 on Hulu.
