The Susan Boyle backlash has begun.
Most of the complaints aren't specifically about Boyle, but about the show-business touches that framed her Britain's Got Talent performance, which has been viewed online more than 30 million times. Some commentators, including the New York Post's Maureen Callahan, are suspicious of the perfect underdog story contained in the seven-minute video of Boyle's performance.
Movieline's Kyle Buchanan, meanwhile, argues that no one involved in the production was as surprised by Boyle's performance as the video suggests. He accuses producers of "trotting Susan out and editing her as though she is an innocent naif who just walked on stage and hasn't already survived at least ten audition rounds in front of the show's creator/producers, one of whom is the head judge, Simon Cowell."
Some have even dared suggest — gasp — that Boyle isn't much of a singer.
But, in yet another sign that she's here to stay, a Glendale, Calif.-based company claims to be offering the singer $1 million to make a porn movie — the kind of offer that is quickly becoming standard for anyone who's famous for anything.
