We're not ready for this premiere

A new photo from Riverdale Season 4 has arrived, and as to be expected, it is an emotional one. Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted the image of Archie (KJ Apa) and Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald) embracing each other, as Mary clearly has tears in her eyes, on Tuesday morning.

"No words," Aguirre-Sacasa captioned the photo, along with a heart and a writing emoji.

The Season 4 premiere will address the death of Fred Andrews, played by Luke Perry, who passed away from a massive stroke last spring. Because the rest of Season 3 had already been mapped out and mostly written at the time of the actor's death, so the show's creative team decided to address his tragic departure in the new season.

As previously revealed at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this summer, Ringwald will return to the show to help her on-screens son through the loss of his father. Additionally, Perry's friend and Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty will guest-star in the episode to pay tribute.

Fred was not just a kind father, but a mentor to Archie when it came to the type of man he should be. Saying goodbye to him is going to be hard for the character and for fans who have fallen in love with the dynamic the father and son had. If the sadness is this deep just from a photo, make sure you stock up on tissues before the episode airs next month.

Riverdale Season 4 premieres Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 8/7c on The CW.
