Report: Law Enforcement Sent Ray Rice Video to NFL in April

The Ray Rice scandal continues.

A day after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell denied having seen video of Rice physically assaulting his fiancée before it was leaked, a law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that he sent the damning footage to the NFL boss in April.

The source played the AP a 12-second voicemail from an NFL office number on April 9 that confirmed that the video had arrived. A female voice expresses her thanks in the message and says, "You're right. It's terrible."

The law enforcement official said he had no further communication with any NFL employee about the images and can't confirm who watched the video. Although the individual was unauthorized to release the video, they sent a DVD copy of the security-camera footage unsolicited because they wanted the league to have it before deciding Rice's punishment. The individual also claimed that he included his contact information with the DVD.

In his interview with CBS News' Norah O'Donnell on Tuesday, Goodell said that the NFL asked authorities for the tape of Rice hitting his now-wife Janay Palmer in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino, but were not able to obtain it. The footage that originally leaked in February only showed Rice dragging Palmer out of the elevator, and Rice was subsequently suspended for two games.

The Baltimore Ravens running back was dropped by his team and suspended indefinitely from the league on Monday after video of his and Palmer's entire altercation surfaced on TMZ.com.

The video sent by the law enforcement official, which was shown to the AP on Monday, is slightly longer than TMZ's version and includes some audio. In the video, a hotel staff member can be heard saying "no cops" as they see Rice dragging Palmer out of the elevator.

When asked about the voicemail Wednesday, NFL officials once again asserted that no one in the league had seen the video before Monday.
