The Walking Dead and Marvel's The Punisher star Jon Bernthal and Bates Motel's Vera Farmiga have each joined the cast of the David Chase-led prequel pic in unspecified roles, Variety reports. While details on their roles are still being kept under wraps at this time, both of these actors have sizable experience starring in similar stories — Bernthal appeared in TV's Mob City while Farmiga had a breakout role in Martin Scorsese's The Departed, so they each know their way around a faux-mafioso scenario, even if neither appeared in The Sopranos during its initial bow.
Titled The Many Saints of Newark, the film is expected to journey back in time to events that took place before The Sopranos, with Alessandro Nivola on tap to star as Dickie Moltisanti, the fabled mentor to Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) who was also Christopher's (Michael Imperioli) father.
The movie is expected to be set in the 1960s, at a perilous time in New Jersey when Italian-Americans and African-Americans were at odds with one another and things became violent.
No word yet on a release date for Newark, but the film is expected to debut in theaters.
All six seasons of The Sopranos are available for streaming at HBO.
