The end is nigh for The Vampire Diaries. Star Ian Somerhalder said the upcoming eighth season would be the drama's last at WalkerStalkerCon in Nashville on Sunday.

"We have decided to do one last season to really do the story justice," Somerhalder said, according to the convention's Twitter account.

The quote is in line with what Somerhalder told TVGuide.com at the end of March, when the actor also lamented the direction the series has taken. "It's almost like we've been chasing a high for the last five, six years," Somerhalder said.

However, according to a CW spokesperson, "no decision has been made in regards to the show's fate," Varietyreports.

But on the chance that the drama does return for a ninth season, it would be without star Kat Graham. The actress told Us Weekly that next season will be her last playing the witch Bonnie Bennett. The Vampire Diaries already lost star Nina Dobrev in Season 6, who had anchored the series since the beginning.
