Expedition Guide for BBC Kids Show Killed By Elephant

An expedition guide for a children's program was killed by a charging elephant in Tanzania with three children nearby, Britain's Press Association reports.

Anton Turner, 38, was tracing the footsteps of explorer David Livingstone in Africa for the children's BBC series titled Serious Explorers, a spokeswoman told the news agency. "We understand at this stage that he was charged by an elephant and was mortally injured," the spokeswoman said.

Turner, a British citizen, was treated at the scene by a doctor traveling with the expedition. Turner died soon after the accident. Production of the program has been shut down.

Three children were present at the time of the accident, all of whom are safe and have since been airlifted from the scene; four more children who were in Tanzania for the program are scheduled to return home as well, according to the spokeswoman.

"Anton's relatives have been informed and the BBC is arranging for them to fly to Africa as soon as possible. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Anton's family and friends," she said. "Anton was an extremely experienced expedition safari and wildlife ranger and former Army officer who had worked with the BBC in the past."

According to the spokeswoman, the BBC has begun an investigation into the incident.
