Eight Is Enough Star Dick Van Patten Dies at 86

The actor was best known for playing Tom Bradford, one of TV's greatest dads

Dick Van Patten, best known as the loving dad from Eight Is Enough, has died at the age of 86, according toThe Hollywood Reporter.

Van Patten passed away Tuesday morning in a Santa Monica hospital due to complications from diabetes.

"He was the kindest man you could ever meet in life. A loving family man. They don't make them like him anymore," the actor's publicist Jeff Ballard said in a statement.

In addition to playing Tom Bradford on the long-running ABC series, Van Patten also worked closely with Mel Brooks, appearing in High Anxiety, Spaceballs, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and When Things Were Rotten. More recently, he was seen on Arrested Development, The Sarah Silverman Program and That 70's Show.

Van Patten is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat, and sons Nels, Jimmy and Vincent.
