DIVINE INTERVENTION

Jim Carrey's God-like comedy Bruce Almighty, ahem, deified the odds over the four-day Memorial Day weekend by crushing the all-powerful Matrix Reloaded. Bruce debuted at No. 1 with a miraculous $86.4 million, the best non-sequel comedy opening in history and a personal best for Carrey. That pushed Matrix to No. 2 with $45.6 million — a steep 60 percent decline from its huge opening weekend haul. (Again, I blame that painfully drawn-out Zion dance sequence.) Rounding out the top five: Daddy Day Care (No. 3 with $18 million), X2: X-Men United (No. 4 with $13 million) and the new Michael Douglas-Albert Brooks comedy The In-Laws (No. 5 with $9.1 million).
