Dancing With the Stars Sends a Legend Packing

Surprise! Lamar Odom seems to be actually improving

Dancing With the Stars returned for its second week of the season Monday, with its new breed of galloping celebrities vying to prove who's the least awkward among them. It's still hard to say at this point who the clear frontrunners are; contestants seem to still be shaking off jitters, figuring out how to move with their bodies and take notes from their partners. What's much clearer though is which of these talents will get plucked off one-by-one in the coming weeks, and tonight's first elimination got that process rolling already. Scroll to the bottom to find out who got sent shuffling away, but here's how the contestants fared.

James Van Der Beek (TV icon) and Emma Slater
Cha Cha
Coming off a strong performance last week, James again showed he may be a frontrunner in this season, kicking off the night with a solid performance that included a wowing split jump. Bruno called it "showy," which, excuse me pot talking about the kettle!

Discover your new favorite show: Watch This Now!

Sailor Brinkley-Cook (model) and Val Chmerkovskiy
Rumba
The goodwill from her unexpected entry into the competition ain't gonna last forever, and while judges rightfully praised her near-perfect steps, she's going to need to loosen up and connect with her partner as this thing heats up.

Ray Lewis, Dancing With the Stars

Ray Lewis, Dancing With the Stars

ABC

Ray Lewis (NFL Hall of Famer) and Cheryl Burke
Foxtrot
Many athletes come onto DWTS and transfer those skills to the dance floor but Ray is not one of them. He's still really clumsy looking, although his charm almost makes up for it. Almost.
15/30

Ally Brooke (pop star) and Sasha Farber
Viennese Waltz
Ally has lots of potential, but it's sometimes stunted as she occasionally sacrifices accuracy in favor of sort of doing her own thing. She's naturally really rhythmic but she'll need more rigor to really be a serious contender as the competition gets more serious.

The Voice Season 17 Premiere Proved It Doesn't Need Adam Levine to Succeed

Mary Wilson (The Supremes) and Brandon Armstrong
Cha Cha
Geez. You want to root for an icon like Mary Wilson but with errors plaguing her performances and the appearance of slight fatigue showing, she just doesn't have the supreme energy to carry her far in this game.
15/30

Lauren Alaina (country music star) and Gleb Savchenko
Paso doble
intoxicating and sensual, particularly when Gleb ripped off her skirt. She was a bit stiff, but she was trying to break out of her shell and for the most part, that worked.
19/30.

Sean Spicer (former White House press secretary) and Lindsay Arnold
Tango
After a very uncomfortable opening bit wherein Sean said he'd draw on his past to start campaigning for votes (ugh) Spicer delivered another wooden performance that confirms he's as deficient in rhythm as he is a soul. The judges said he was improved, but that's a low bar.

Prodigal Son Premiere Recap: So Your Father's a Serial Killer

Karamo Brown (TV host) and Jenna Johnson
Quickstep
Karamo, who had an assist from old dance mentor Carol, looked thrilled to be here, and rocked this dance with the enthusiasm of a puppy. It was energetic, precise and fun to watch. Carrie Ann mentioned liking the "pizazz" but Ken lamented a lack of calm and a lack of body contact with Jenna.
19/30

Kate Flannery (TV star) and Pasha Pashkov
Foxtrot
Aw! Kate was a vision as she floated around the floor. She isn't exactly a technical superstar when it comes to the full execution of the movements, but she moved with grace and a kind of old-school glamour that made watching her feel like a dream.
21/30

Kel Mitchell (comedian/actor) and Witney Carson
Samba
Kel moved with more control and focus this week than he did last, managing to bring some discipline to the routine set to Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step," even if it could have stood a little more seriousness to the sometimes unpolished moves.
20/30

All Rise: Don't Get Your Hopes Up for a Lola and Mark Romance

Lamar Odom (two-time NBA champion) and Peta Murgatroyd
Salsa
Lamaropened with a heartfelt story about the overdose that nearly killed him a few years ago, and the subsequent memory loss he's suffered as a result. Petra explained how she has to re-teach Lamar steps over and over and while that sounds rough it's obviously working: Lamar looks better than he did last week. The guy is never going to be a twinkletoes out there but he's trying, and it shows.
12/30

Hannah Brown (The Bachelorette) and Alan Bersten
Flowy and sensual, Hannah moves on the floor with grace and confidence. This was another beautiful performance from her coming off last week's second-highest score -- thanks in part to that gorgeous gown that billowed with every movement she made.
24/30

In the end, the shocking twist was that Ray Lewis, Sean Spicer, and Lamar Odom got to stick around another week over Mary Wilson, who got eliminated with Brandon. Dancing With the Stars can be a cruel world where even beloved American greats get the boot in favor of less talented players, but hey, they don't make the rules -- they just dance to 'em.

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8/7c on ABC.
