The New York City novelist created, writes and executive-produces HBO's twee sitcom about a New York City novelist named Jonathan Ames (meta alert!) who moonlights as a private dick. He even cowrote the show's theme song with star Jason Schwartzman. Plus, he guest-starred in this week's episode as Irwin, the new lover who came between comic-book artist Ray (Zach Galifianakis, who must regret having signed on for this limp gig before he became a movie star) and his ex-girlfriend, Leah (Heather Burns).
Oh, and did I mention that Ames did his entire performance in the nude, complete with a frontal shot? The fact that Ray justifiably mocks the size of Irwin's manhood doesn't make this bit of stunt casting any less self-indulgent.
Do you think Jonathan Ames is beating this in-joke to Death?
