Al Gore is taking a rare step in front of the camera to lead his cable network's coverage of the Democratic and Republication National Conventions this summer, The Wrap reports.

Gore will take part in a roundtable panel joined by Viewpoint host (and former New York Governor) Eliot Spitzer, The War Room host (and former Michigan governor) Jennifer Granholm and The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur. California lieutenant governor and Current personality Gavin Newsom will also contribute to RNC coverage. The View's Joy Behar, whose Current TV show launches next month, will pitch in on DNC coverage.

The RNC kicks off Monday, Aug. 27 at 7/6c from Tampa Bay, Fla. The DNC coverage starts Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7/6c in Charlotte, N.C.

"I'm pleased to be participating in Current TV's impressive line-up throughout the Republican and Democratic National Conventions," Gore said in a statement. "Cenk, Jennifer and Eliot provide the keen insight and spot-on analysis our viewers have come to expect, combined with decades of experience in public service and a deep understanding of politics. I have no doubt that our coverage will be innovative and informative, and I look forward to working with them."

Gore, 64, launched Current TV with businessman Joel Hyatt in 2005.
