Set in 1961, WEEKEND WARRIORS film follows a bunch of movie-biz employees who have joined the National Guard to avoid the draft. For one weekend a month these wackos assemble at a nearby Hollywood base camp where they are subjected to the rages of Sgt. Burge (Vic Tayback) and the eccentricities of Col. Archer (Lloyd Bridges). The narrator of the story is struggling screenwriter Vince Tucker (Chris Lemmon, son of Jack), who introduces us to some of his buddies: a bisexual gossip columnist; the members of a doo-wop singing group; a makeup man who does mortuary work on the side; a huge bodybuilder type who talks like Elmer Fudd. After being threatened with active duty if they don't shape up, Vince and his pals decide to stage a real Hollywood-style extravaganza to dazzle a visiting congressman and the Romanian ambassador. Honestly, there isn't one moment in this alleged comedy that anyone over the age of seven would find even remotely funny. Bert Convy is a wretched director who can't even compose a simple shot, pace a sequence, or control an out-of-sync performance. The performers are mostly bland and annoying, with the exceptions of Lemmon and Bridges.
