Vampires Suck Reviews

Reviewed By: Derek Armstrong

Vampires aren't the only things in this movie that suck. Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer may be trying to deflect association with their previous projects (Date Movie, Epic Movie, Disaster Movie) by omitting the word "Movie" from the title, but Vampires Suck is Friedberg and Seltzer at their best -- which is to say, Friedberg and Seltzer at their worst. With Vampires Suck, at least the writer-directors have reined themselves in, focusing on a single ripe topic for parody: the Twilight saga. By concentrating their questionable comedic energies on just one basic plot structure, they at least don't seem quite as guilty of the scattershot approach that characterized their previous films, where the narrative was always secondary to any gag involving the current pop-culture landscape -- regardless of relevance. No, you won't make it through Vampires Suck without the requisite incongruous references to Alice in Wonderland and Lady Gaga, but at least you can count on one hand the number of blatant departures from the central theme. Then you're just left with a bunch of lame vampire jokes, which is most assuredly not an outcome worth celebrating. The best thing Vampires Suck has going for it is its two charming leads, Jenn Proske (in the Bella Swan role) and Matt Lanter (in the Edward Cullen role). They're not great, but they're likable enough that you find yourself wishing they didn't have to be in this movie. Meanwhile, the "biggest name" in terms of his current trajectory in the comedy world is Ken Jeong, but he's so underutilized that you almost forget he's even in the cast. As for the jokes themselves, they mostly involve people getting hit in the face or head with flying objects. Friedberg and Seltzer are nothing if not predictable.
