Tom Brown's School Days Reviews

An uneventful adaptation of the childhood classic that was never really good movie material to begin with. Lydon plays the young lad forced to leave his comfortable home to attend a school filled with ruthless hooligans. He manages to make a few friendships and learns to defend himself, getting through to the point where he's almost a well-disciplined young man. Hardwicke is the schoolmaster with the unflattering task of maintaining order and developing a sense of respect in the boys. He goes by the philosophy of sparing the rod, which has unbelievable results. TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS was remade in 1951 and previously filmed in 1914.
