There's That Woman Again Reviews

This sequel to THERE'S ALWAYS A WOMAN retained director Hall and debonair star Douglas; but this time Bruce replaced Joan Blondell in the role of Douglas' wife, and Bruce simply couldn't muster the skills of her predecessor. This time around, the Mr.-and-Mrs. team of private eyes are trailing some stolen jewels. While the couple is looking into the robbery, a pair of murders, including that of a diamond merchant, crop up. In the film's funniest scene, Bruce is caught accidentally in the shower of one of the suspects, making for a few good moments. However, the picture is no THE THIN MAN and ultimately rings hollow in its attempt to be a light, charming murder mystery. Things are just a little too cute for their own good and the story is filled with too many implausibilities. Douglas and Bruce have little trouble finding the clues they need or getting through ostensibly locked doors, making for an easy, predictable chain of events. Though Douglas gives this one of his usual gentlemanly humorous performances, Bruce overdoes it trying to re-create Blondell's performance. Though she has some funny moments, Bruce doesn't remain consistent. Bogged down with cliches and a forced style that's passed off as engaging, this sequel is a poor follow-up to a clever effort.
