Huston is the commander of the French cruiser Lafayette which is attacked by German submarines and sunk. The few survivors are rescued and Huston undergoes a formal hearing to determine whether his negligence was responsible for the loss of the ship. Unbeknownst to Huston, his much younger wife, Dagover, was aboard the cruiser at the time of the tragedy; dallying with handsome young lieutenant William, she was trapped in the latter's cabin when the ship put to sea. Also rescued, Dagover is forced to reveal her adulterous indescretion in order to save husband Huston from court-martial proceedings. This was the Dutch-born Dagover's one and only role in a US-made film; she went to Germany where she continued to be a big star after this failure. Oddly, the actress' personal life paralleled that of the character she played, in some respects. At the age of 20, she had married a German actor old enough to be her father. Huston's performance in the film is one of the worst of his long and honorable career. Only William shines as the dashing young lieutenant. A remake of the 1928 silent THE NIGHT WATCH.
