The True Story of Eskimo Nell Reviews

This wonderful offbeat comedy from Australia features Gillies as a Peeping Tom with the moniker "Dead-Eye Dick." He's looking in on a Mexican woman who's married to a passionately jealous man and ends up rescuing Lazareff, a rogue who has been carrying on with the woman. The two form an odd friendship as Lazareff tries to help the shy Gillies with his lady problems. Gillies claims he's saving himself for "Eskimo Nell" of Alaska. The pair go off to meet her and run into a few adventures along the way. The picture is great fun thanks to the wonderfully weird chemistry between the two leads. Though the script tends to wander, the pair salvage it with their surprisingly sensitive and very funny performances. The direction is smooth, showing a good ability to handle off-the-wall material with ease. The photography makes fine use of Australian and Canadian locations.
