The Silent One Reviews

A mysterious, mythical picture about a boy, Malese, who arrives in a small village after emerging from the sea as an infant. He is adopted by Evison and tagged "the silent one" because he does not speak nor hear. He is soon resented by the villagers who believe he possesses strange powers. Malese makes little attempt to adapt to village life, choosing instead to swim in the sea with a friendly albino turtle. The boy's entire being is shrouded in mystery, especially when it seems that he has transformed into a turtle at the conclusion. Based on a children's novel, THE SILENT ONE will probably find a number of young fans, but many adults will be intrigued by the mythical elements of the child. Historically, THE SILENT ONE stands as the first New Zealand feature directed by a woman.
