Caine is a successful writer whose imagination becomes increasingly vivid when his wife, Jackson, travels to Europe. Separated by hundreds of miles and angry emotions, Jackson forgets about her husband and becomes attracted to German drug-smuggler Berger. She returns home to Caine in Britain, and the pair invite Berger to stay with them. Caine is intent on having the fellow help do some writing, but instead finds him fondling his wife. Jackson runs away with Berger, but Caine pursues and retrieves his wife. This intelligent film (a comedy, of sorts) from Joseph Losey explores Luigi Pirandello's concept of characters being under control of the author.
