Newsreels originally produced by Louis de Rochemont and narrated by Westbrook Van Voorhis comprise the fifth part of the six-volume March of Time: The Great Depression videotape series. Subtitled Prosperity Ahead, this installment chronicles the news of 1936. The archival segments deal with various stories and topics, including: "The Lunatic Fringe"; "Passamquoddy"; "U.S. Milky Way"; "Labor Versus Labor (Labor's Civil War)," about conflicts between labor groups; "Queen Anne's Bounty," about England's tithe war; "The Football Business," concerning college football becoming big business; the U.S. Presidency; "New Schools for Old"; "A Soldier King's Son"; "An Uncle Sam Production," a look at the U.S. government sponsoring the Federal Theater; "New Life in China," about China's dictator Chiang Kai Shek being kidnapped by a Manchurian warlord; "Business Girls in the Big City," about young women leaving their rural homes to seek their fortunes in the big cities of America; and "The St. Lawrence Seaway." Gleaned from newsreels produced by Time Magazine during the years 1935-1951, the monumental March of Time videotape series features the "pictorial journalism" that informed, educated, and entertained millions of Americans for 16 years.
