The Last Remake of Beau Geste Reviews

Written and directed by funnyman Marty Feldman (best remembered for his appearances in Mel Brooks' spoofs YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and SILENT MOVIE), THE LAST REMAKE OF BEAU GESTE puts a comic spin on the classic 1939 Foreign Legion adventure. Beau Geste (essayed by Gary Cooper in the original) is now played by York; his brother Digby (originally Robert Preston) is played by Feldman. As in the 1939 version, the plot revolves around Beau's heroics in the desert and the disappearance of a priceless family gem, but into this story Feldman tosses anything and everything--some of it funny, some not so funny. Perhaps the best aspect of this rather haphazard production is the cast, which includes James Earl Jones, Henry Gibson, Peter Ustinov, Roy Kinnear, Terry-Thomas, Trevor Howard, and Ann-Margret. Definitely more gags than guns.
