Grit of a Jew is one of several curious British films of the silent era that manage to be both sympathetic and mocking towards the Jewish race. Augustus Yorke plays Moses Levi, who makes a contract with a moneylender. There's a proviso which promises that Mose's son (Hayford Hobbs) will marry the lender's daughter. At the last moment, Levi finagles a way to assure a happy ending for his son and the girl he really loves (Manora Thew). The Hebraic characterizations in Grit of a Jew might seem offensive today, but were considered not only acceptable but realistic by filmgoers back in 1917.
