The American distributor for The Four Leaved Clover did his best to obscure the French origins of the film, even unto changing the names of the leading players to Clare Bates and Henry Fox. Set during the French Revolution, the story focuses on Esperance, the daughter of aristocrats. When her home is burned and sacked by the revolutionaries, Esperance manages to escape, joining up with a traveling circus. Years later, the girl is abducted by a young Army officer, who hopes to seduce her. Unbeknownst to either party, the officer is the girl's own brother, but the timely resurfacing of a long-lost locket embossed with a four-leaf clover (the family crest, of course) prevents the young man from making a tragic mistake.
