The Doomed Battalion Reviews

During WW I in a snowbound Tyrolean pass, a long stalemate is soon to be broken when the Italians finish digging a tunnel under an Austrian position, then blow it sky high. The Austrians know what the Italians are up to, but they have been ordered not to budge from their position. Trenker is an Austrian who sneaks over to the Italian lines to discover the exact time of the explosion, hoping to save the battalion. Varconi, the Italian commander, and Trenker's old friend from mountain climbing days before the war, is now billeted in Trenker's own house with the latter's wife (Birell). Good performances somewhat redeem this pointless attempt to repeat the formula of ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT. Remade in 1940 as SKI PATROL.
