Interesting western written and produced by DUEL IN THE SUN (1946) author Niven Busch. The story concerns a field boss of an American oil company, Ayres, who flees into Mexico on the lam from a murder charge. He hides out in a priest's cabin and tells his tale in flashback. A year earlier he had killed a man he suspected of having stolen the oil company payroll. Obsessed with the belief that the man may have been innocent, Ayres seeks out the dead man's wife, Wright, to find out more about him. Soon Ayres and Wright fall in love and marry. The dead man's possible innocence still bothers Ayres, keeping him from being fully happy. He sets out to find the true robber who, he discovers, is now a respectable businessman. The businessman is accidentally killed, causing Ayres' flight to Mexico. In the end, he is captured by the authorities, leaving his and Wright's future in doubt. Great performances by Ayres and Wright with an interesting and powerful use of native Mexican music that haunts the whole film.
