That Girl from Paris Reviews

French opera star Lily Pons, RKO's answer to Columbia's Grace Moore, is appropriately cast as a French opera star in this joyful musical farce. Because a jealous suitor has failed to get her a passport, Pons must hide from immigration officials while she is in the US. She hooks up with McLean's Wildcats, a swing band led by Raymond, who is unaware of her success as a coloratura soprano opera singer. It's not long before Pons and Raymond fall in love, plan marriage, and return to New York, where Pons has a date at the Met. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Sound, but lost to SAN FRANCISCO. Musical selections include: "Una Voce Poco Fa" (from Gioacchino Antonio Rossini's "The Barber of Seville"), a swing version of "The Blue Danube" (Johann Strauss), "Love and Learn," "The Call to Arms," "Seal It with a Kiss," "My Nephew from Nice," "Moon Face" (Arthur Schwartz, Edward Heyman), "Tarantella" (Panofka). Remade in 1942 as FOUR JACKS AND A JILL with June Havoc in Pons' "Jill" role. A 33-year-old Jimmy Dorsey appears, uncredited, as one of the jazz musicians in Raymond's band, in this, the biggest hit of Pons' brief movie career. She married conductor Andre Kostelanetz the year after THAT GIRL FROM PARIS came out.
