She Loves Me Not Reviews

Better in terms of plot than the usual Crosby vehicle of the early 1930s, this film adaptation of the popular Broadway play, still running when the picture was released, has Bing and Nugent as roommates at Princeton. They take pity on Hopkins, a cabaret singer who witnessed a murder and fled for fear of involvement. They give her a place to stay but insist that she wear men's clothing to keep from arousing suspicion. She in turn helps to wreck the engagement of Crosby to the dean's daughter, Carlisle. It's all light-spirited enough, handled briskly in both direction and writing. Bing is his usual relaxed self, with his voice doing its bit. The song "Love in Bloom" (Ralph Rainger, Leo Robin) was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song (the first year an award was presented in that category), but lost to "The Continental" from the GAY DIVORCEE. Other songs include "After All, You're All I'm After" (Edward Heyman, Arthur Schwartz), "Straight from the Shoulder (Right from the Heart)," "I'm Hummin' (I'm Whistlin', I'm Singin')," "Put a Little Rhythm in Everything You Do" (Mack Gordon, Harry Revel), and "Cocktails for Two" (Arthur Johnston, Sam Coslow). Remade as TRUE TO THE ARMY (1942) and HOW TO BE VERY, VERY POPULAR (1955).
