A truly reprehensible exploitation film, SAVAGE WEEKEND was originally shot in 1976, but went unreleased until 1981 when Cannon picked it up for distribution following the success of the slasher-movie cycle. Several couples go off to a remote country house in upstate New York for the weekend. As the couples engage in various soft-core sex acts, a masked killer begins stalking and killing them one by one. While it can be looked upon as a precursor to the mad-slasher films that would dominate the horror genre in the 1980s, SAVAGE WEEKEND is a distinctly sleazy and truly offensive effort. Ultra-low-budget and shot on grainy color stock, the film is borderline pornography, and the gore effects are extremely gruesome. Director David Paulsen would surface again with SCHIZOID (1980).
