This Norwegian production was based on the famous 19th-century novel by Alex L. Kielland. The main character, played by Tore Foss is a despotic priest who hopes to play God on Earth. Exploiting the many religious celebrations indigenous to Norway, the priest intends to collect and command all human souls. The virginal heroine is played by Elese Merete Heiberg, in her first film appearance. Essentially Scandinavian in its appeal, Sankt Hans Fest nonetheless enjoyed a brief U.S. run under the literally translated titled St. Hans Celebration.
