Only rarely do self-conscious films striving for cult status succeed. REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS is a self-consciously bad film that not only shoots for cult status, but also enters another dangerous cinematic ground: the genre parody. Unfortunately, REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS focuses on the women-in-prison genre, which is practically a self-parody by definition. Jenny (Linda Carol) is a nice but wayward girl who is tossed into a nasty reform school after helping a boy friend rob a convenience store. She is shocked to find that her section is dominated by a mean-spirited lesbian inmate dressed in black leather underwear, Charlie (Wendy O. Williams), whom the obese dorm matron Edna (Pat Ast) allows to run wild. Although Jenny tries not to get involved, she can't help but defend another new inmate, Lisa (Sherri Stoner), a weak and childlike teen. Loaded with ridiculous scenes, silly dialog, and gratuitous violence and nudity, REFORM SCHOOL GIRLS tries very hard to exploit the genre while poking fun at it at the same time. The only problem here is that little is funny.
