The film's production in the Guatemalan jungle would have made a better story than the picture itself. Burroughs formed his own company and took it into the jungles of Guatemala where the crew had to put up with some intolerable conditions. Many got sick from insect and snake bites. Native extras had a hard time acting around Nkima the chimpanzee. And to top it all, in the middle of production, Burroughs fell in love and ran off with his partner's wife. Star Brix, then recently of Olympic fame, was paid a measly $75 a week to accomplish difficult stunts on his own and suffer the jungle heat. The results aren't really worth it, as the film is weak in direction and plot development. This is perhaps the only Tarzan movie in which the hero speaks fluent English, as he does in the book. The story revolves around Tarzan's search for a missing friend, which leads him to the temple of the Lost Goddess, a place filled with priceless gems and guarded by ruthless monster men.
