My Old Dutch Reviews

A simple, straightforward boy-meets-girl story. A couple from Cockney London meet and get married. They have a son and raise him to manhood. On the night before he goes into the army, the young man marries his sweetheart. He's killed in the war but she bears his son. This is a nice film, though its simplicity eventually undermines its sweetness. Ultimately it becomes boring, with a predictable sequence of events. Balfour, who handles the lead, is funny and effective. MY OLD DUTCH was actually based on a Cockney song, and was previously made in 1915 in a version starring Albert Chevalier, who sang the song originally and who also coscripted this film.
