Miguel Unamuno, a revered intellectual and rector of the University of Salamanca, finds himself torn between his ideals and popular opinion during the 1936 Spanish coup. The military junta occupying their city forces him to draft and sign a manifesto to support the coup, which he gallantly refused. He ends up supporting Franco's ascent to power.
