George Clooney wears two hats, or in the case of this winning gridiron romp, one hat and one helmet, as both director and star. He plays Dodge Connolly, a 1920s pro-footballer who tries to save his floundering squad by signing a college star (John Krasinski) to help get the team on track and, more important, turn a profit. Renee Zellweger costars as a reporter who becomes the object of affection for both. Randy Newman, who composed the film score, has a cameo as a speakeasy piano player.
