Carre and Montana may have concocted the story line for GUN SMOKE as they filmed it (the script is uncredited), plugging in all the standard western film conventions as they went. Like many another handsome cowboy hero, Coburn rides to the rescue of an outlaw-bullied rancher and his pretty daughter. En route no innovative additions to the genre are made.
