Graft Reviews

Toomey is an overeager cub reporter determined to bring in a hot story. He is sent to interview a building contractor, played by Davidson, and overhears an argument between the man and Revier, Davidson's former mistress. She is about to inform the district attorney about Davidson's illegal dealings, thereby ruining his political future. Davidson has the DA killed and Revier kidnaped. Toomey implicates Carol in his story, but when she is proven innocent his editor fires him. Determined to get to the bottom of things, Toomey follows the trail to the yacht where Revier is being held captive. He fights off Karloff, the real murderer, and frees Revier. Getting his story to the paper on time, he not only wins back his job, but Carol's love as well. It's all unrealistic and silly stuff, though the pace keeps things somewhat on edge. While working on this film, Karloff was seen by James Whale one day at the studio commissary. Whale offered the relatively unknown actor a screen test for FRANKENSTEIN, and the rest is film history.
