During World War II, a teen enlists in the Navy and is sent to the South Pacific, where he saves a horse who becomes the unit mascot, and is later able to return the favor and save the sailor.

Thompson joins the Seabees when WW II breaks out. He leaves behind the prize horse he had raised from a colt. The young man finds another horse--Bess--on a Pacific island and adopts the mare. It brings his unit luck, and, when Thompson is sent state-side, he brings the horse with him. Whoa, Bess.
