Follow the Fleet Reviews

Often regarded as one of the best of the legendary Astaire-Rogers musicals, FOLLOW THE FLEET really isn't up to TOP HAT, SWING TIME or ROBERTA, the wonder films of the series. The main reason is the bland plot, which, though similar to that of several of their other films, grinds along at a rather poky pace. Astaire and Scott play sailor buddies on leave, and Rogers and Hilliard are cast as sisters with whom they become involved. Essentially consigned to second-lead status, Rogers and Astaire fittingly play the couple who already know each other, and they banter their way through their dialogue with great rapport. Their range and talent as dancers is also on prominent display here, from their explosive romp to "Let Yourself Go" to Astaire's blazing nautical tap to "I'd Rather Lead a Band" to Roger's delightful solo, her first in the series. They are hilariously out of sync with each other in a comic cut-up routine to "I'm Putting All My Eggs in One Basket" and resume their trademark after-dinner elegance for a stunning turn to "Let's Face the Music and Dance." Performed as part of a melodramatic playlet onstage, this glamorous number is the closest they ever got to playing Garbo, replete with sumptuous poses and an unforgettable finale. Occasional lumps notwithstanding, FOLLOW THE FLEET is great entertainment. All aboard!
